Visit to Kyangala - November 2017


​In November 2017, John Harrison visited Kyangala to:


  • Review how the hardship money had been spent.
  • Discuss the formalising of Kyangala Trust (Kenya)
  • Review the work to the girls school extention
  • Visit the Kalama health centre
  • Visit Mutuyu school and dispensary
  • Talk about partnership and joint projects for 2018

​The pictures on the right and the notes below are a summary.

Good News

  • School Extension almost finished  - Dec 2017
  • Primary School kitchen is finished
  • The Kalama Health Centre Water tank is installed
  • Money for the hardship fund has been distributed ( against agreed criteria) and accounted for 
  • Container of clothes, blankets and books near ! Delivered next week – delayed due rains
  • Rains have come and crops are plentiful
  • Water is plentiful in the rivers 
  • Funding for a doctor for the Kalama Health Centre has been agreed subject to completion of building works incl accommodation

Not so good news:

  • Travel in the area is treacherous
  • The Kalama medical centre dispensary is bare
  • The maternity unit is grim
  • The health centre is not clean and surfaces are not sterile ( layman’s view) 
  • The primary school is a mess, management is not on top of maintenance 
  • The state school is bursting with pupils  - facilities can’t cope

What next!
  • Projects to fund next from existing monies........
  • Incinerator
  • 2No. 10,000 litre water tanks / rainwater harvesting
  • Ceiling 
  • Waiting area  for HIV patients
  • Drugs for dispensary 
  • (Approx £10k) 

Next priorities
  • Mutuyu dispensary/health centre extension of building
  • Mutuyu dispensary – Drugs 
  • Kyangala Primary school -  cleaning , floors/ celings/lighting
  • Mutuyu Secondary School ( state school)  - extra classes
  • Mutuyu School - Water tanks
   Approx £10K

Trip 2018 Objectives
  1. Convert the maternity unit at Kalama Health Centre into a pleasant bright environment with a nursery  (Paintings/pictures/art work/toys/books) 
  2. Refurbish the Kyangala primary school  (joint effort , local builder, Kyangala Trust UK, Kyangala Trust (Kenya) , parents of schools)
  3. Provide some basic training to locals in importance of cleanliness and sterilisation ; set up a regime to clean the hospital facility daily.
2018 Visit ( July/Aug-tbc) 

  • Need people to give up a week of their time
  • Fund their own trip (£1000)
  • Need people who care
  • Need people with skills 
    • Building
    • Artwork and decoration – creative people 
    • Medicine / Nursing
    • Labourers and people willing just to get stuck in
